History

Carey Lodge Established

The Carey Masonic Lodge was chartered by the Grand Lodge of Masons in Ohio on October 21, 1868. The Masons met on the second floor of the old Frederick’s Grocery until 1902.  In 1902, the Lodge moved to their current site.

In the spring of 1901, Edgar B. Kurtz (Lois is his great, great grand niece) and George P. Cheesebrough had completed the construction of their new two story building at what is now 105 W Findlay St.    Kurtz and Cheesebrough made the offer to the Masonic Lodge that the Lodge could build a third floor at the Lodge’s expense and they in turn would give the Masonic Lodge a 100 year rent-free lease.  This proposal was accepted with William H. Snyder contracted to build the third floor. J.C Dow was the chairman of the project.
